Overview

Sonic DVD On Demand is a comprehensive technology platform that enables the recording of premium content to DVD-recordable discs with the same, or better, level of copy protection found on today's in-store DVDs. Being both protected and compatible with the hundreds of millions of DVD players deployed worldwide, Sonic DVD On Demand opens a whole new way to digitally deploy movies with the same quality and level of interactivity as standard DVDs, but with virtually no inventory management costs. Sonic DVD On Demand enables a whole new distribution channel: electronic sell-through.

DVD-on-Demand Components

Sonic DVD On Demand leverages the company's AuthorScript DVD formatting and burning engine. Building on AuthorScript, Sonic DVD On Demand provides a DRM gateway for secure export of content from approved download systems, precision video codecs that simultaneously convert Internet-delivered video into MPEG-2 video for DVD during the download process, and automated DVD formatting tools for converting video into interactive DVDs, Sonic DVD On Demand also includes an Extensible Media Protection Architecture (XMPA) that allows a wide variety of studio-approved copy protection mechanisms to be applied to DVDs as they are being burned. Sonic DVD On Demand is also capable of delivering the special features, additional language tracks and bonus material that are traditionally included in retail packaged DVDs in addition to printable DVD labels and cover art. Sonic DVD On Demand has been incorporated into a comprehensive range of SDKs that can be customized to meet the specific needs of partners and deployed in a variety of solutions including on-demand manufacturing systems, set-top devices, retail kiosks, PCs and software applications.

DVD On Demand Client Applications

Sonic DVD On Demand includes easy-to-use client applications that will allow consumers to browse, purchase, and securely record premium video content onto DVD. Designed to enable online content distributors to get up and running quickly with DVD-on-Demand products and services, the application is skinable and provides a complete SDK for integrating 3rd party on-line stores. In addition, the application will be released as part of Sonic's Roxio-branded consumer line and distributed broadly through Sonic's extensive OEM and retail channels

Implementation Scenarios

DVD Manufacturing-on-Demand

Traditional mass replication of DVDs can be augmented with on-demand creation from an unlimited virtual inventory. Custom disc orders from 1 to 1,000 can be filled and shipped directly to customers or into retail or mail-order channels. Discs can be customized on demand with selected languages, branding, up-to-the-minute movie trailers, and other advertising.

In-store DVD-on-Demand Movie Kiosks

Recent surveys indicate that more than 30% of U.S. retail DVD buyers leave stores empty-handed because the movies they are looking for are not in stock or are not in print. Sonic DVD On Demand-enabled solutions enable retailers to place small-footprint interactive displays on the retail floor from which the consumer can select from a massive catalog of titles. With the appropriate duplication hardware, DVDs can be burned on-demand in less than 15 minutes and be delivered on the spot with full-color disc labels and cases.

Consumer Download and Burn to DVD

Sonic DVD On Demand-enabled solutions will allow consumers to browse, download and burn movies and television programs at home via a PC or set top device, while giving content owners an opportunity to connect directly to their customers.
