Sonic's Qflix Program Earns Prestigious Popular Science Best of What's New Award
Secure DVD Movie Download and Burn Technology Honored for Innovation in Home Entertainment
Novato, CA, November 13, 2007 - Sonic Solutions® (NASDAQ: SNIC), announced today it was honored with a Best of What's New Award from Popular Science, the influential science and technology magazine. The accolade is in recognition for the company's Qflix™ program, which includes technology and intellectual property for enabling consumers to legally record Internet downloaded movies to DVD. Popular Science editors selected the Qflix program from thousands of submissions representing a broad range of industries, aviation and space, engineering, personal health, and technology. The Qflix program and other Best of What's New winners are being showcased in the December issue of Popular Science - the most widely read edition of the year.
"We are honored to be recognized by such a highly regarded journal noted for identifying innovations making a positive impact on life today and changing our view of the future," said Dave Habiger, president and CEO, Sonic Solutions. "The Qflix program significantly moves the category of home entertainment forward; delivering a solution that - for first time - couples the convenience and immediacy of Internet video distribution with the permanency, portability, and compatibility of the DVD video format."
Based on the recently approved industry specifications for recording electronic downloads set by the DVD Forum and the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA), the Qflix program establishes a new channel for content owners to digitally distribute their broad entertainment catalogs. The Qflix program is being licensed by DVD media makers, optical drive manufacturers, retail kiosk vendors, and duplication system suppliers forming the ecosystem for factory, in-store, and in-home ‘DVD on demand' systems.
About Qflix and Sonic DVD On Demand
The Qflix program offers a new means for content owners to release titles for custom production and sale over the Internet while maintaining the same level of copy protection used on commercially mass-produced DVDs. Sonic's Qflix program provides essential technology and IP for both the professional and consumer markets. For professional and enterprise manufacturing of DVDs "on demand," the Qflix program allows production facilities to reduce the cost of carrying physical inventory while simultaneously offering extensive catalogs of content. The program also enables retailers to broaden the number of movies by augmenting physical product with on-demand DVD creation kiosks in their stores. For consumers, the Qflix program provides a long-awaited downloading and burning solution for movies and premium video content in computers and consumer electronic devices such as set-top boxes, networked DVD recorders, and DVRs.
Sonic DVD On Demand is a complete solution for custom preparation and burning of DVDs in industrial, retail, and home environments. Sonic's Extensible Media Protection Architecture (XMPA) includes extensive Qflix support to enable secure electronic delivery and burning of video encrypted with CSS (the industry-standard Content Scramble System) to recordable DVD media.
