Sonic Launches DVD Play and Burn Solutions for Broadcom-Powered Set-tops

Sonic's AuthorScript CE SDK Enables DVD Navigation and Burning for Makers of Cable, Satellite, and CE Devices

Las Vegas, Nevada - CES (January 5, 2006) - Sonic Solutions® (NASDAQ: SNIC), the leader in digital media software, today announced the availability of AuthorScript® CE for the Broadcom® BCM7038 chip, providing a complete, integrated DVD burning and playback solution that is available now for incorporation into commercial cable, satellite and standalone consumer electronics (CE) products. The launch highlights Sonic's leadership in DVD technology and will speed the time-to-market of DVD playback and burning in satellite, IPTV and cable set-tops.

Sonic's BCM7038-ready version of the AuthorScript CE software development kit (SDK) is the first of many collaborative efforts expected from a multi-year development and licensing agreement with Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors. The agreement brings Sonic's AuthorScript CE engine to Broadcom's DVD-equipped set-top box reference platforms, enabling consumer electronics manufacturers who market cable, satellite, IP and set-top boxes and CE devices to easily add DVD recording and playback capabilities to their products, enhancing consumer appeal, lowering subscriber churn, and enabling new electronic sell-through models such as Sonic's DVD on DemandT for service providers.

"We've earned our industry-leading position by providing our cable, satellite, IP and CE customers with set-top solutions combining unsurpassed performance, quality, integration and value with ease-of-use and reliability," said Joe del Rio, product marketing manager of Broadcom. "By integrating Sonic's AuthorScript technology into our flagship platforms, we are able to continue delivering the quality our customers expect from us while enhancing the Media Center capabilities of our products with DVD playback and burning capabilities that excite consumers and drive new sales."

The inclusion of AuthorScript CE in Broadcom's BCM7038-based reference platforms, the BCM97038 and the BCM97398, allows manufacturers of cable, satellite, IP and standalone CE products to offer consumers a convenient, integrated home entertainment environment combining multiple functions in a single, easy-to-use set-top box, including digital video recording (DVR) with an electronic program guide (EPG), DVD playback and record, and HD digital cable. The simplicity, reduced clutter, and lower cost of a single-box solution, along with the appeal of being able to save valued content with a built-in DVD recorder, is expected to give service providers a powerful new tool to attract consumers as they continue to grow the expanding market for broadband digital services. The development of Broadcom-compatible AuthorScript implementations also paves the way for electronic sell-through of premium content.

"DVD recording is the number one additional feature that DVR users say they want, and AuthorScript CE offers that feature and more in a proven, easily-integrated solution that is built on the same Sonic technology that leads every DVD authoring sector from Hollywood to the home PC," said Jim Taylor, general manager of Sonic's Advanced Technology Group. "By partnering with Broadcom, we've been able to integrate AuthorScript into a complete package that lets new and existing Broadcom customers take advantage of the combined strengths of our two companies."
