Sonic Desktop DVD Software
Shipments Top Three Million Units
MyDVD® and DVDit!® Sales
Soar as Consumers Embrace DVD Creation
Marin County, California (February 13, 2003) — Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ:
SNIC) announced today that the sales of its desktop DVD creation applications,
Sonic MyDVD and DVDit!, have topped the three million unit mark. This three
million milestone was reached only six months after Sonic announced the two
million mark of shipments, and underscores two key trends: 1) DVD-recordable
drives are on a rapid growth curve that is expected to continue in 2003 and
beyond and 2) with an estimated 85 percent share of market, Sonic Solutions
continues to be the dominant supplier of DVD creation software to PC, peripheral
and drive OEMs such as Adaptec, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi,
Matrox, Memorex, Nova, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Sony and many others.
Based on the same technology as Sonic’s industry-leading Hollywood DVD
production systems, Sonic MyDVD and DVDit! make it fast and easy for home users
and video enthusiasts to create DVDs and VCDs of their own videos and photos
and add the same sizzle found in Hollywood titles. With the ability to simply
drag-and-drop video and audio into a project, design interactive menus and
record the final content to DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, DVD-RAM or CD-R/RW, Sonic’s
DVD applications offer the most flexibility and compatibility of any application
on the market. With OpenDVD® technology, Sonic users can also re-edit
their DVD and VCD projects later at any time and add and delete content and
change menus.
"Sonic has long been at the leading edge of DVD creation and their MyDVD
and DVDit! applications deliver the ease of use, high performance and exceptional
features that we expect for our DVD recording products," said Andy Parsons,
Senior Vice President, Business Solutions Division of Pioneer Electronics (USA)
Inc., a Sonic OEM partner. "Sales of MyDVD and DVDit! exceeding three
million units is a clear testimony to the quality of their products." "Sonic products provide a strong balance between ease of use and powerful DVD
creation capabilities," said Jeff Loebbaka, Vice President and General
Manager, Desktop Solutions Group at Adaptec. "As the leading provider
of DVD-creation solutions for home-PC users, and the clear choice of OEMs,
Sonic continues to provide us with best-of-breed products which help us to
assert our leadership in providing high-quality desktop-PC solutions for home
DVD creation."
"DVD creation used to be an exotic process, reserved
for video industry professionals," said
Dave Habiger, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sonic’s Desktop
Products Group. "At Sonic, we’ve worked hard to deliver our Hollywood-strength
technology in applications like DVDit!, MyDVD and PrimeTime™ which make
it easy for consumers to create their own personal blockbusters right on their
PC desktop. Sonic plays the leading role in delivering easy-to-use and powerful
DVD creation software to tens of millions of consumers."

Sonic MyDVD also features optimized Direct-to-DVD™ recording which allows
users, in just a few clicks, to record content directly to DVD from a video
source connected to the computer’s video input. Sonic MyDVD is also OpenDVD®-compliant,
enabling previously burned DVDs to be opened, re-edited, updated with new video
and photo content and re-burned to DVD and CD recordable/re-writable media.
This enables an entirely new generation of DVD and CD applications, such as
video diaries, up-to-the-minute, customized sales presentations, compilations
of family events, and more.
